Know How To Operate Your Protein Skimmer To Keep Your Fish Healthy
Protein skimmers have been found to be great keepers of clean and clear water for saltwater and reef tanks. But that doesn't mean that if you have one installed, you should keep it running the whole day. The extent of your skimmer’s operation will largely depend on two factors: how many living organisms you are keeping in your tank and how many times a day you feed your pets. With that information, you may decide how long your protein skimmer can run. But one thing is for sure: it is unnecessary to keep protein skimmers running for a full 24 hours.
An ozone reactor is another beneficial device for the maintenance of your tank. While its use is not as widespread as that of a protein skimmer’s, it is as beneficial. The ozone that an ozone reactor produces increases the level of dissolved oxygen content in your tank. This issue though isn't really something that saltwater aquarium owners should be conscious of, since the use protein skimmers also serves that purpose. However, in freshwater aquariums which host a lot of active fish like cichlids or large fish like fahaka, koi or arowanas, a high level of dissolved oxygen levels is a must.
On the other hand, installing bulkhead fittings in a fish tank is a very delicate procedure. It is most advisable that you leave the work to a professional or someone who does it always. A DIY installation of bulkhead fittings may cause you a lot of dollars, especially if you end up drilling a hole that’s too big for the fitting, causing the pipe or tube not to snugly fit, which in turn making the tank useless. Once the hole of the correct size has been made in the tank, you can do the insertion of the fitting’s threaded end through the hole. A rubber washer or grommet should then be placed over the threaded end’s protrusion. Sealing the bulkhead fittings would then be done.
Will home depot drill something for you for free?
I want to make a DIY filter for my fish tank, and basically what I need is a 3/4" hole to fit a bulkhead into a pvc cap. I don't want to pay for a 3/4" drill bit...does home depot offer some kind of drilling service?
I had no idea they were so cheap lol
thanks a lot
