The Complex Mechanism Of A Centrifugal Pump
Centrifugal pump is mechanical equipment that is utilised for transferring gas or liquid from one place to another. Basically, this device is composed of 2 main parts: the impeller, and the circular pump casing.
The most well known type of centrifugal pump is the volute centrifugal pump. Gas and liquid first enters the pump’s opening at a fast speed, just near the middle part of the revolving impeller and it will swirl against the pump’s casing through the vanes. The centrifugal pressure pushes the liquid through the inlet inside the pump casing. This opening gradually grows into a spiral motion which will reduce the velocity of the liquid, and as a result, boosting its force and pressure.
Kinetic and Potential Energy
Centrifugal pumps produce a continuous flow of liquid and works by changing kinetic energy to potential energy. This is measured by SFP (Static Fluid Pressure) at the outlet of the pump. This process is based on the Bernoulli principle.
The mechanical movement of the pump’s electric motor and the impeller of the pump produce kinetic energy towards the fluid by means of a centrifugal force. The liquid will then be transported to the piping hole, then to the impeller intake and will finally be forced into the impeller vanes all the way out to the outlet piping.
The impeller is the revolving part of the pump which converts energy into kinetic energy while the diffuser volute is the motionless tool that converts kinetic energy into a pressurised energy.
Stationary Pressure and Air-Flow
As the liquid goes out to the impeller vane, the kinetic liquid pressure will then be turned into a static pressure. If the piping outlet is widely open at the low level, the liquid will then be released at a bigger volume and faster speed. Typically, centrifugal pumps are employed in industrial effluent treatments, mine drainage, transporting ‘live’ fish, emptying sumps, feed oily liquid separators, oil and chemical spillage, sludge processing treatments, parts washer devices, plant transfer for vegetables and fruits, municipal waste water treatments, and a lot more.
The centrifugal pump device is one of the simplest kinds of equipment applicable for a liquid/ water pumping processes. This device is designed to convert energy into kinetic energy with a fast speed and into high-pressured water which is what is actually being pumped.
Another type of this device is the vertical centrifugal pump, also known as the cantilever pumps. The only difference of this type to the usual centrifugal pump is that it has a different bearing and shaft design.
This pump design uses a no box-stuffing to cover the shaft, but rather it has a throttle bushing for effective usage. Most commonly this type of pump is used in parts washer.
